Shree Shantadurga temple has a remarkable statue of Goddess Shree Durga. It is situated 33 kms away from Panajim, at the mount of Kavalem village, Ponda Taluka in Goa. This temple is named after the Goddess ShantaDurga. The deity, Shree ShantiDurga is also appraised as 'Santeri' idiomatically. The historical stories tell about a clash between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The clash was so fearful that Lord Brahma prayed to Goddess Parvati to interrupt to stop the warfare. She entered into the warfare in the form of Goddess Shantadurga by keeping Lord Shiva on her left side and Lord Vishnu on the right and thus the fight came to an end. Therefore she is shown in an idol clutching two serpents in each hand which represents both the Lords.

She was also rewarded with the name of Vijaya (Shri Vijayadurga) and her temple stood in Shankleshwari along with Shri Shantadurga and Shri LakshmiNarsimha. Many Daivajnas, Saraswat Brahmins, and their homage to Maa Shantadurga as Kuldevi (the family deity) and pray her as a protector of the universe. The festivals Muktabharani Utsav and Shree Laxmi Narayan Utsav are the most famous festivals of the temple.

The ShantaDurga temples are located in Kavalem, Pemem and Fatorpa (Quepem) in Goa. These temples are remarkably contributing in the travel destinations of Goa as the devotees worldwide visit the temples to pay their homage. There is held a yearly festival in the temple’s boundaries named as Zatra celebrated in Pausha Shuddha Navami fetches millions of disciples visiting from different parts of the world.

This name ShantiDurga was named after she came to bring peace between the warfare going amongst the Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Thus she is known to be Shanti (the sign of peace). She is worshipped by her devotees to keep peace all over the mankind. However after the war was over, she was placed at Keloshi but later on was reallocated to Kavlem during the reign of Portuguese in India in the 18th century This temple originally started building in 1713 AD till the 1728 AD. There was also made a guest house named agarshala on all the three sides of the main temple. There have been done so many amendments and renovations to the temple since then by her devotees to make it look more beautiful.

Shri Shantadurga temple consists of an outstanding holy place Garbhakuda which is known to be the ‘holies of the holies where the idol of goddess is reserved. The architect of the temple is tremendous. There are several specialties in the temple that makes it much more pro-tourism. The main temple possesses a beam tower called Dipa Stambha and a massive tank. The devotees come and worship Maa Durga for their harmony, peace and safety of the mankind.
