Vishwakarma Puja: Vishwakarma is known as the God of engineering. In Hindu mythology God Vishwakarma is depicted as the creator of the universe. He created the cosmos taking directions from Brahma who is the lord of formation. This festival is organized on Kanya Sankranti day. The festival is especially popular in Orissa. In each town of Orissa, the festival is celebrated with fire works depicting the modern technology. Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated in the month of September. The Puja is of great importance to people who are engaged in creating physical infrastructure. For example roads,
buildings, engineering works, equipments of any sort. All such work is started after the performance of Vishwakarma Puja and every year the Puja is conducted to revere the God of construction.
In Hindu mythology, God Vishwakarma is also known as “Devashilpi”. He created the universe, the earth and the heaven. Vishwakarma is also known for creating weapons for wars. He is known to have created the weapon called “Vajra”. Lord Vishwakarma is known to be the best worker. He was dear to Gods for his craftsmanship. Lord Vishwakarma is known to have created the towns of Hastinapur and Dwarka. Most important creation of Vishwakarma was Lanka, which was known as “sone ki Lanka”. Lord Vishwakarma is the heavenly designer who is transporting a water pot, a volume, Vishwakarma Puja India
a rope and craftsman's paraphernalia.

Celebrations on Vishwakarma Puja: The Puja is performed with great enthusiasm. The Puja is mostly held in the offices, workshops and factories in the industrial area. The shops and offices are decorated on the festival day. The industrial areas especially come alive with beautiful pandals. The ambiance in the workshops becomes lively. The workers are very happy on the occasion, they also get a day where they can come together and celebrate. God Vishwakarma is worshiped along with his vehicle, the elephant. The lunch is also organized free on the occasion of the Puja.

The Puja ends with the distribution of 'Prasad'. People also fly kites on the occasion. One can see multicolored kites in the sky.

The Puja has a great relevance. Construction is basic to human life. From time immemorial people are engaged in construction work to make their life easy. Even in the modern day where technology has taken over, the work starts only after worshiping the God of construction, 'Vishwakarma'.
